Onis Stone Gives Back

Fort Worth, Texas May 24, 2011 — Onis Stone donated over 50,000 pounds of stone materials to The Phoenix Commotion, a Texas building initiative that builds houses with re-salvaged & recycled materials at a low cost targeting single mothers, low income families & artists.

The Phoenix Commotion was created to prove that constructing homes with recycled and salvaged materials has a viable place in the building industry. Like Onis Stone, The Phoenix Commotion hires apprentice labor with a strong work ethic, those who are willing to work in order to learn marketable skills. By keeping labor costs low and using donated or found materials, the homes created are truly affordable.

Sheri Bennett, Onis Stone President, read an article in a TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) quarterly magazine called The Advocate.  She called Dan Phillips, the Phoenix Commotion owner, and discussed what he used on his homes.  Dan then sent a truck and the Onis Stone crew filled it up.

The donated stone consisted of high quality granite, marble, and travertine materials left over from cutting slabs into custom countertops. These pieces are too small for complete countertops or vanities. Normally, they are cut up into “pavers” to sell or used to create “custom collages”.

When asked why she would give away these expensive stone materials for a project like this, Sheri replied, “Accumulation is meant for distribution.  He has a need, we have the material.”
